How to burn

Four simple steps for a better candle experience.

These simple habits help your double-wicked candle burn cleanly, evenly, and safely.

01

Trim both wicks before each burn.

Before lighting, trim both wicks to about 1/4 inch. This helps control flame height, reduce soot, and encourage a cleaner burn.

02

Let the wax melt close to the edges.

On the first burn, let the melted wax reach close to the edges of the jar before blowing it out. This helps prevent tunneling.

03

Burn on a stable, heat-safe surface.

Place your candle somewhere steady and heat-safe, away from drafts, curtains, books, plants, pets, children, and anything that can catch fire.

04

Stop burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains.

Discontinue use when about 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning beyond that point can overheat the glass.

Safety notes

Candlelight should feel cozy, not risky.

Every candle should be burned with care. Keep these safety notes in mind each time you light your candle.

Never unattended

Stay nearby while it burns.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish it fully before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Avoid drafts

Keep the flame calm.

Drafts from fans, vents, open windows, or busy walkways can make flames flicker unevenly and affect the burn.

Clear space

Give the candle room.

Keep your candle away from curtains, paper, books, plants, shelves, pets, children, and anything flammable.

Candle care FAQ

A few burn questions, answered.

Quick answers for getting the best experience from your Shalom & Sparrow candle.

Why do I need to trim both wicks?

Trimming both wicks helps keep the flames at a better height, supports a cleaner burn, and helps prevent excess soot or mushrooming.

How long should I burn my candle the first time?

Burn it long enough for the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the jar. This helps create an even wax pool and reduces the chance of tunneling.

Can I burn my candle all day?

We recommend burning in reasonable sessions rather than all day. Always watch the candle while it is lit and extinguish it if the flames become too high, the jar gets too hot, or the wicks shift.

What should I do if the flame gets too large?

Extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim both wicks back to about 1/4 inch, and make sure the candle is away from drafts before relighting.
